The media has a big impact on how people perceive hacking, such as in movies or TV shows. These forms of entertainment are just that, for entertainment. Therefore, they will dramatize what hacking is because hacking by itself is not very interesting to watch if you do not know how it really works or they are trying to find a way to make a scene feel more intense. The media will make people aware of various terms or methods that are used by hackers, such as SQL injection, but they will sometimes use it in a context that does not make sense for that method to work. One of these examples is in Star Trek, where a futuristic spaceship is able to be attacked through SQL injection. Hollywood also likes to exaggerate the abilities of a hacker making it seem like they are able to break into the most secure systems with ease and making hackers out to be highly sophisticated. Film and TV also make it seem like the most common hacking attacks are pointed at government agencies, large organizations, or other critical infrastructure. This is typically not the case with most attacks are faced by smaller companies or individuals. While the media does get a lot of things wrong when it comes to hacking, they do help bring awareness to the importance of cybersecurity.
