After taking the Social Media Disorder Scale-9, I received a score of 1, which means that I have a normative social media use. I feel that the questions do a decent job at determining someone’s use of social media with the given 9-item question count. There is another version of the scale that uses 27 questions and, therefore, will be more reliable since they can be more specific with their questions rather than the 9 broader questions on the smaller scale. I think that the different patterns that are shown across the world give a great insight into the use of social media for different cultures and age ranges. For example, 50% of college students perceive themselves to have an addiction to social media of around 75% – 100%. The scale also showcases which aspects such as preoccupation, tolerance, withdrawal, persistence, displacement, problems, deception, escape, and conflict.
