Discussion Board: Ethical Considerations of CRISPR Gene Editing

For our discussion board, we are asked about possible ethical considerations and explain your position. An ethical concern is that since attacks like these are possible, a lab that sues similar or the same equipment if unsecured could be used for a malicious purpose, such as using DNA sequencing to exploit software. My position in this is that if a lab ever gets compromised, whether it be a research lab or something like a hospital, if the tools they are using aren’t secured, they could be used to exploit and become exploited with these attack vectors. Another ethical concern is that since DNA was used, it is possible that the DNA of a person could be used in a cyberattack and could be pulled into it without actually having any involvement other than their own DNA being used. So my position with this is that at least for companies or hospitals or researchers who use your DNA, they should make sure that this is properly secured and that patients or people who have decided to give their DNA should be informed about the risk that this could happen to them. Other ethical considerations are the use of DNA in technology since DNA is something that can identify a person and it’s something you’re not able to change, like a social security number, so the question is if it’s really necessary for companies to use DNA. My position on this is that, just like the last one, people should be informed about the risk of sharing their DNA, and also, just like the last one, it is very important that the companies that store your DNA do it in a proper and secure manner. The last ethical consideration that I have is that people would be informed what their DNA is being used for, and my position is that you can pull a lot of information about a person just from looking at their DNA, whether it be medical, checking their ethnicity, or gender. DNA can be used for a lot of things, and it’s important for people to know what exactly it’s being used for.
