Week 5 – Journal Entry 5

  1. Money – I think most cybercrimes are financially motivated, especially with crypto currency being so high.
  2. Hacktivism – I think nation backed threat actors and political hacktivist groups are relatively common.
  3. Revenge – Revenge is a strong motivator since people can have personal grudges and want to get back at someone.
  4. Fame – I think some attackers want recognition of their skills, so they try to prove it by hacking.
  5. Curiosity – Younger hackers are often interested in finding out what abilities they have, which can lead to seeing what systems they can breach.
  6. Entertainment – Some individuals might like the thrill of hacking something they are not supposed to.
  7. Multiple Reasons – this can be a mix of motivations, but usually not motivated by one thing in particular.
  8. Boredom – This definitely seems like the weakest motivation since hacking is not easy and often takes planning. When videogames and sports exist, it seems unlikely that someone would hack just because they are bored.
