Reflection 1

  1. Write a short reflection (#1) (3 paragraphs) on the project to this point-after the development of the lesson by your group.  See Service Learning Instructions for more information. Our service learning project started off very early and very interesting. We started off by narrowing down our topic and age group to present too. we went over the pros and cons of each topic and age group to find a match that would be both interesting to keep the classes attention while also having enough material to cover and split between our entire group. we finally decided on DNA/GENEs  and to present to a middle school audience. This was our final choice as it has enough material to split between our entire group for around a 45 minute presentation, while also being interesting enough to keep the kids attention. We then created a fun and informative flier to get the students interested. We created a create a ” Build a Monster Workshop” after the ” Build a Bear Workshop” and explained a little on what we would be adressing such as DNA and genes!  We then went over our options to present our project. we went over powerpoints, kahoot, games, worksheets, and other ideas that could work with keeping the attention of our class when we present. we eliminated a lot of options and finally ended on a worksheet and powerpoint combination. We  broke up into groups to work on the worksheet and power point seperatly while still keeping in touch over a groupchat. Our presentation will include a work sheet that will apply the subjects that we will be teaching to the students in real time. To confirm that the students are learning what we are teaching, we will have them ” build their own monster”. For example, choosing traits such as horns and wings that will be assigned dominant and recessive genes. while simultaneously explains dominant and recessive genes through punnet squares. This is still a work in progress and we are currently making sure our two groups are in sync so that we can plan our presentations to go along with the worksheet as we are presenting.
