Values that are important to me:
- Hard work- You need to work hard to get where you want to go.
- Commitment- You need to be able to commit yourself if you want to see it through.
- Persistence- You need to be persistent to keep you from getting discouraged.
- Passion- You need to be passionate about the things you do.
- Caring- You need to care about something in order to do it.
- Love- You need to be able to love what you are doing.
When I graduated from high school, I went to college because it was what was expected of me. I did get two Associates degrees. Then I got a job working in higher education (community college), not even one that uses the degrees I received. Five years later I decided to come back to school to get my Bachelors. This decision was prompted by the baseball team that was newly established at my college. Working with and being around those guys made me want to go back to school so that I can ultimately work with the student athlete population. I was literally standing on a baseball field turned to my friend/ coworker and said I want to work with them. The next day I submitted my application for ODU.
Those baseball players are the whole reason I went back to school. I told very few people about the fact that I was going to go back. Those that I did tell were very supportive. More people know now and I have received a great amount of support. The best response that I got telling someone I went back and why was from one of the baseball players. He looked me right in the face and told me that I would be good at that and I was the type a person that someone like him needs. Him and others that have shown be that support are the reason why I have stuck to this and will be graduating in spring.
Blog 1
By understanding the various objectives that will be covered in this course, I will be better equipped to work and effectively communicate with a variety of individuals from widely different cultures and backgrounds. I expect that this course will give me the ability to view the psychology and theories behind how culture impacts who we are, how it effects our environment, and how it influences those around us. This course will also give me the ability to better interact with people from many different cultures. I hope to gain the ability to learn more about myself and the people around me. That I will be able to use this information to better my understanding of other people’s views.
In order to ensure my success in this course I will have to keep an accurate account of the assignments and their due dates. I will also need to read all of the information provided in Blackboard and in the book as well as actively take notes on the information being covered.
