Introduction
Dr. Insun Park, an assistant professor at the University of Akron, wrote “Understanding Deviance and Victimization in Cyber Space among Diverse Populations.” She received her Ph.D.
in criminal justice, and her research focuses on the impact of contact with the criminal justice system on youth and young adults. In this review, I summarize the article and provide insight into how it relates to social science and cybersecurity principles.
Article Summary
This journal article illuminates the different experiences various demographics face within technology and cybercrime by providing research and analysis of three separate research papers—specifically, the experiences of Black college students, older adults, and Internet users from Nigeria. Park’s article is a review article, meaning it does not present any original research findings. Instead, Park synthesizes the findings of previous studies on cyber deviance and victimization among diverse populations. Park’s article draws on various data sources, including academic journal articles, books, and reports from government and non-profit organizations. Park analyzes this data using a qualitative approach, meaning she focuses on identifying patterns and themes in the data.
My Review
This article was good to review because it relates to topics discussed in my Cybersecurity and Social Science class. One example is victimization. The article highlights papers that combat the idea of victim precipitation by providing the impact that other variables have on cybercrime by using multiple marginalized groups as references. Marginalized groups are often disproportionately targeted by cyber deviance and victimization. For example, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities are more likely to be victims of cyberbullying. Racial and ethnic minorities are likelier to be online hate speech victims. Dr. Park’s article also provokes the discussion of psychodynamics and cyber offenses. This includes addressing issues such as social exclusion, discrimination, and lack of access to resources of the offenders. We must create a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive online.
Conclusion
Park’s article makes several significant contributions to society:
- The article raises awareness of cyber deviance and victimization among diverse populations.
- The article identifies several factors contributing to cyber deviance and victimization among diverse populations.
- The article suggests directions for future research and intervention.
Overall, Park’s article is valuable to anyone in the cybersecurity space. The article is well-written and informative, providing a comprehensive overview of the topic from a diversity perspective.
