Social media has always played an important role within sports organizations and campaigns. Social media provides the opportunity for teams, athletes, and leagues to connect and engage with their fan base at any given time making it one of the most important marketing tools for the sports industry. When it comes to exposure for sports social media is what catches fans attention. Reaching target audience, increased website traffic, getting new customers and getting sales for sport organizations and campaigns is a major goal and social media is the reason sport organizations and campaigns can reach their goal today. In a reading “Sport, Public Relations and Social Media” by Raymond Boyle and Richard Haynes they talk about how the International Olympic Committee blue-chip Olympic partner gained huge traction from social marketing campaigns via sites such as twitter and YouTube. The campaign was strong and was termed a “social media buzz” with more than 17,000 posts mentioning their brands in connection to the Games. The “buzz” many other sponsors such as visa, Coca-Cola, and McDonalds. Apple has a social media marketing campaign that increases brand awareness through their Instagram page, hashtag and the requirement that people share their photos with their own followers. Apple is a very known social marketing campaign that I was introduced to. Apple use other social media platforms for customer engagement very well compared to other campaigns. A campaign that is doing well now is the WNBA for their Orange Hoodies campaign who sent hoodies to celebrities and athletes.
