Six-time Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix has spent her entire career focused on track. But since becoming a mother in November 2018, she emerged as a feminist activist front and center in her newly sponsorship with Athleta. Felix broke ties with Nike over what she described as an unfair treatment of pregnant athletes. Felix published a story in the New York Times where she revealed that Nike wanted to pay her 70% less after giving birth to her first daughter in November 2018. Her sponsorship since 2000 had broken down when the company refused to include protections that would safeguard her from pay cuts if her performance in the months after giving birth was not up to her usual speed and standards. Felix returned to racing for the first time in 13 months in July at the US National Championships and after her meet she decided to not renew her Nike Contract and instead joined women’s athletic wear company Athleta. With the powerful words from several other women athletes like Alysia Monta and Kara Goucher their words was so powerful that Nike agreed to change its future contracts with female athletes following the backlash. Nike has recently released an ad giving an appreciation to women athletes who are pregnant. The caption of the ad stated, “To every mother, everywhere you are the tougher athlete”. Felix praised the ad for its content calling it powerful and saying it celebrates mothers and reminds them that they are athletes, but she also points out how it was hard was to watch because it ignores the struggle it took to get to this point.
