SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

An Effective Reflection Is

  • Written in English.
  • A demonstration, explanation, comparison of skill and growth described through what you learned and the challenges you had in that learning while highlighting your best work.
  • A discussion of how you overcame any weakness or obstacles. Explain what you mean.
  • Supported by evidence as represented by your artifacts (course materials, photographs, video, conversations, projects, news reports, authentic materials, etc.).
  • Specific, addressing particular strengths, weakness, skills, transformative experiences, etc., avoiding vague generalizations (ex: “I learned a lot.”).

An Effective Reflection is not

  • Only sharing an artifact without context or discussion.
  • Only a description or explanation of an artifact. Focus on your learning and growth as a result of having completed that experience.
  • An attempt to justify your work to an instructor. Instead, think more broadly about future audiences that might benefit from seeing evidence of your work and the skills you are developing.

Artifacts

A good artifact is a portion or clip of an assignment. It needs to be carefully selected to provide evidence/proof that supports what you are saying in your reflection.

Your reflection will help you determine what that will be. It is a quest for quality. It will represent you academically and professionally and have personal meaning. It can be written, audio, or video.

At the end, ask yourself if the artifacts best demonstrate your abilities and growth over time.

At the end of your reflection in each section, link or embed the assignment/artifact. If the assignment has multiple pages and seems to overwhelm the section, consider adding just the first page and offering to provide the rest upon request.

Exploring Culture

The way I have gained a new perspective on cultures from around the world is music. I listen to many different countries’, races, religions music it is a new experience that I have discovered. Music is universal and something that anybody can understand if they listen.

Listening to Spanish music gave me a new outlet to express myself I see things in a new light with instruments and Rythm. I never used to listen to music with an accordion or maracas Spanish music like tango Cuban, Mexican, Dominican it has a universal beat. A misconception I thought would be the lyrics I could not understand them. over time i broke through that barrier and ignored the lyrics and just listened to the music. with Spanish 101 I’m beginning to understand the lyrics and feel for the meaning of the song.

Engaging in Communities

In high school I was raised near Spanish speaking people I always wondered what they said. If i never talked to them, I would never be interested in Spanish or the impact of it for a career.

Interpersonal Communication

I used Duolingo as a way to learn Spanish orally and through writing outside of class. having a random conversation in Spanish would be excellent but fear of saying the wrong thing or wrong pronunciation is what stops me personally. I have to mentally reassure myself of my grammar and vocabulary

Presentational Speaking

I attempted to speak in Spanish to my friend who speaks fluently in Spanish, speaking in Spanish to someone is a challenge you have to translate in your headfirst and then speak. the more you do it the faster the translation and sooner or later you can just think of the words to say without the English counterpart.

I excelled in computer coding for my freshmen year here and when i was in middle school I struggle with math, but I got better with practice and repetition.

Presentational Writing
I read many articles for Telemundo and other Spanish speaking news sources to gain a grasp of the Spanish language. I’ve gotten better in Spanish since i started i now can speak with a better accent and give my opinion of something in Spanish without having doubts about its pronunciation and if im texting the spelling. Spanish and other topics I’ve learned have become easier with more time dedicated to it. i excelled in Spanish when I was younger but never got into fully only small words

Interpretive Listening

activities I have completed have been Spanish learning exercises which have helped a lot. i have now tried speaking Spanish to my parent with limited success. find the right words with Spanish have made things challenging for me but through it all I found a way through.

with each lesson of Spanish, I have grown I would say, i now can listen to Spanish songs and understand a quarter of it. I still have a way to go but with persistence and repetition I should be fine and capable

Interpretive Reading

I read Telemundo as practice for Spanish, and it has given me an incentive and idea of my placement in Spanish.

when I first started this class, I changed the language of my phone to Spanish to get better at cues of Spanish at it has helped a lot I now know many more words for common apps and buttons on my phone
