Journal Entry #1

As a computer science major, I believe that my major is related to cybersecurity technologies in an indirect and direct manner. I say indirectly as computer science doesn’t focus solely on cybersecurity, but instead it encompasses multiple subjects like software development, networking, databases, and more. However, as a lot of the branches of computer science deal with cyberspace, they become interconnected with cybersecurity. You could be a web developer who has to take into account the security of the webpage that is being built. You will need to make sure that any preventable vulnerabilities are accounted for and dealt with before being attacked. Or, you could be a database admin who needs to ensure that the database that they are managing is secure to prevent any intrusions and leaks of personal information. In both cases you would ideally have enough knowledge to ensure that no matter what task you are handling, you are making sure it is secure.

A more direct route that could come from the Computer Science major be someone like an ethical hacker. They would play a vital role in testing to see what ways are possible to attack an app or technology with vulnerabilities. Or you could be someone on the team of the web developer mentioned above who is solely responsible for ensuring that there are programs in place that can detect hidden threats on the website. From these two examples, it can be seen that there are also direct ways a CompSci major can be involved with cybersecurity technologies.

As Computer Science is the study of computers and its technologies, it is a broad major that teaches many technological disciplines that can be combined in many different ways. A significant reason into why they can all tie in together comes from how they all connect in cyberspace. It is for that reason that we are able to see how cybersecurity technologies can tie into each path that comes from Computer Science.
