How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?

Through some way or another, we have all heard a story about somebody “sticking it to the man” at work, but you can also call it workplace deviance. Deviance itself means departing from the accepted standards, especially in a societal or sexual behavior. So, as I’m sure you have guessed, workplace deviance is departing from the accepted standards of your workplace. There can be several outcomes of workplace deviance from low impact to severe damage being done to businesses. The thing is, I’m sure almost everybody has acted in some sort of workplace deviance; and with new cyber technologies being developed, it has become very easy to partake in. There are several low impact things a person can do like scrolling through your Instagram feed or forwarding emails to your friends. These acts are all harmless but are classified as workplace deviance. Basically, any time you get distracted by technology at work, you just partook in it. The more severe cases of this are more uncommon but not unheard of, and as before, with new cyber technology more damage can be done than ever before. There are stories of employees launching cyber-attacks, or creating code that can steal money from their own company are some examples. Workplace deviance can lead to attacks too. For example, an employee can break security protocols innocently, but the breach can lead to data being stolen or lost. So, with all of these new opportunities arising it is important for employers to take this matter seriously. Actions like training employees or using site blocking software are just two simple ways that can make a difference. In the end though, workplace deviance has and will continue to be relevant. It is up to businesses to keep up with the curve and implement strategies to help diminish these opportunities.
