Learning Style

STEP 1: EVALUATE YOUR STUDY HABITS

  1. Describe your current methods of study. How do you study for each class?  For all of my classes, I take notes in a notebook with a pencil regardless if it is required or not. When I want to review/ study the material I learned in class that day, I look back at my notes and utilize online resources if I have to.
    1. What specific techniques do you use in class? The specific techniques I use in class is just (once again) going back over previous notes, writing what is presented on the board, or just actively listening. I have decided this is the best way for me to study in college because college moves in a more independent and faster pace than highschool.
    2. What specific techniques do you use outside of class?  The specific technique(s) I use outside of class is for the most part similar to my techniques IN class. The only difference is when I go back to my notes that I took that day, I highlight and use colored pens to make my notes look more lively and fun (in my opinion). I believe if my notes are just all pen or pencil, it gets boring to look at and won’t help me learn as efficiently.
  2. Identify one class in which you are doing well (not HLTH 101).   What study methods work best and why?

So far, I believe I am doing well in my literature class. The only study method I have to do is honestly just read. There are reading quizzes basically every class and just actually doing the assigned reading and taking notes to accompany what I just read, helps me do well on those quizzes.

STEP 2: IDENTIFY AND APPLY NEW LEARNING TECHNIQUES

  1. Identify one class (other than HLTH 101) where you are experiencing challenges and address the following questions.

So far, I believe I am not doing well in CHEM105 because (mentally) sometimes I am not present in class, and when I get home my notes appear to be in a different language. My note taking techniques help me get through class, but I find it difficult to actually comprehend what i’m learning when I’m not paying attention. I will/ have been utilizing study groups to help me study for chemistry because everyone in the group has strengths and weaknesses and this results in everyone getting the help they need in some form. I plan on spending numerous hours studying for chemistry through a two hour period and a break every 30 minutes. I find that if I attempt to study for a long period of time without breaks, I slowly become disengaged and distracted/tired. I need to spend more time focusing on the basics of chemistry because it has been three years since I have been in a chemistry class. Knowing the foundation/basics for anything in life really will help you in the long run.  For the most part I would like to think I am systematic with my studying because I do not want to fall behind in my studies and have a pile of things to do on top of new things to do. I feel as though I am not taking advantage of my learning supports available to me at this time because I do not think about it in the first place. In the future I plan on using the available resources because it will be beneficial for me in the future. I do not find it a struggle to study because my motivation is not to fail the course or an upcoming quiz/test. The confusion I have encountered so far as been clarified through my peers. My study group and I all assist each other in CHEM105 whenever we are confused about something and as of right now I do not have any current confusions about anything. As of right now, I am in the middle of exam preparation so I do not know what works best for me or not right now. I am reading over the powerpoints that were posted on blackboard and working on practice reviews. I take my exam this week so I am not sure how well I will do or what questions I got wrong.

  1. Review at least 5 academic tips/resources listed here: https://www.odu.edu/success/academic/tips. Which 5 tips did you review, and what is one new technique you could try in class to help you better understand the material? I reviewed setting priorities, staying focus, overcoming procrastination, getting organized, and active not taking tips. One new technique I can try is to make a plan that tackles my priorities
  2. What is one new technique you could try outside of class to help you better understand the material?

One new technique I can try outside of class to help me better understand  the material is to not overextend myself. To do so I have divided my responsibilities evenly between my family, school work, free time, etc.
