My parallel major would be Dental Hygiene. Dental Hygiene helps “prepare men and women as professional dental hygienists qualified for positions in a variety of health-care settings and/or for graduate study in dental hygiene. I chose this as my parallel major because it still relates to the concept of helping people in the health science profession. Instead of the body and other logistics, Dental Hygiene is specifically oral, for the mouth/ teeth. The Dental Hygiene guest speaker told our class that the mouth is kind of like the window to the body because what happens in your mouth/teeth can eventually affect your whole body. The My Majors website states that “ Dental hygienists serve as clinical practitioners, educators, researchers, administrators, managers, program developers, consultants, and/or dental product sales representatives, depending on the individual’s employment setting and educational background. In addition, dental hygienists with a bachelor’s degree may pursue careers in elementary and secondary schools, community and public health settings, institutional and industrial dental hygiene, professional education, and research” I find this interesting because now I know that the Dental Hygiene field does not only pertain to sitting on a chair and being an assistant of cleaning teeth, it is much more than that. A career I can pursue from the Dental Hygiene program is a National Health Service Corps Member. The NHSC helps working areas of the United States with limited access to health care by building healthy communities by supporting qualified health care providers. According to DegreeWorks, the classes I would need for Dental Hygiene are fairly similar to the ones for Nursing. A majority of the classes are the classes (Music, Stat, etc.) I am currently enrolled in or will take next semester. I could gain professional learning experiences to learn more about this study by job shadowing my local dentistry or even talking to someone. This is a similar tactic I learned from our Health 101 class for our service learning assignment. I believe getting experience is important because you will know (experience) first hand or hard (or easy) certain aspects are in your intended career in the future. My advisor would be the same if I were to switch into the major because Dental Hygiene is in the College of Health Sciences.
