SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

In the “Exploracion 1-4 Busqueda en Internet” assignment from Lingro Learning I was asked to look up the most used social media platform in a spanish-speaking culture which helped me to explore different cultures and how they use social media.

I searched “Most popular social media platform in guatemala?” in both English and Spanish. When searching with English I was immediately able to recieve results based off of information from 2017-2018, with facts and data providing evidence of why facebook was the most used. When searching in Spanish I was actually able to change the results from only 2017-2018 to actually having results that were from 2020. This shows that when using Spanish to do research it will provide you with more up to date information.

Engaging in Communities

It is important to engage in the community because not all communities are the same and engaging with them will teach you just how different certain communities and example I can provide was when I visited Cozumel, Mexico. I learned that the legal drinking age was 18 but in the united states it is 21. Which shows how communities have different laws and rules and it can be important to learn them and understand why they are different.

Visiting Cozumel, Mexico made me want to learn more about Spanish-speaking communities and learn the similarities and differences between different communities.

Interpersonal Communication

In Spanish 101 every week we were assigned to complete a conversation assignment where we were given a set of instructions on what to communicate about with another student. Me and the other student would take turns asking questions and responding in Spanish which provided practice with communicating in Spanish so we could put what we learned through Lingro Learning into action.

Through participating in the conversation assignments I was able to learn how to communicate in Spanish using techniques that I learned through Lingro Learning. This taught that even if you do not understand a certain word or phrase that has been said you can figure it out using verbal hand gestures or listening for key words that you do understand and use that information to interpret what the speaker is saying.

Presentational Speaking

In Spanish 101 I was assigned to create a video to where I spoke in Spanish and described three of my favorite places where I study and live. I was also instructed to provide picture to give viewers a visual representation of the places that I was describing.

I overcame this challenge by learning how to explain where I live and study in Spanish. I wanted to learn how to explain these items in Spanish without having to read it so I practiced and I practiced some more until I was able to fully explain everything in Spanish with ease and without struggling on certain words and phrases, this assignment taught me the important of correctly pronouncing certain words and how much of big impact it makes on the overall statement when speaking in Spanish.

Presentational Writing

For Spanish 101 I had to write a formal letter for who I wanted to receive an award for best person. This letter had to be written in Spanish and had to be organized and written professionally. Below I have provided the letter that I wrote that proves that I have been engaging in presentational writing activities.

Atentamente,

Devyn Swann

This assignment challenged me and helped me not to just write in Spanish but to write in Spanish professionally. I’ve learned how to simply communicate and write in Spanish but writing professionally in Spanish helped and challenged me to increase my vocabulary in Spanish and apply it in a professional setting.

Interpretive Listening

In Lingro Learning we had a “Tell Time’ section which challenged us to listen to a speaker tell a certain time in Spanish for us to provide the time said in the answer box. This was very helpful because even though I learned to tell time in Spanish it challenged us with are ability to listen and interpret what the speaker was saying in Spanish.

This assignment challenged me to listen to instead of reading the Spanish language. It helped me over come my fear of being able to interpret and understand what a Spanish speaker is saying to me and gave me a sense of joy once I realized that my studying had paid off when I was able to do it with ease.

Interpretive Reading

For Spanish 101 I had an assignment where I used the language services strategies with a couple of other search engine techniques to find a popular person from Mexico. I found Canelo Alvarez who is from Guadalajara, Mexico and is popular/famous for being a professional boxer and has won multiple matches and competitions in the ring. His fans love him for is hard work on and off the ring and supports his community.

This assignment challenged me to look through popular role model figures in the Spanish-speaking community. I was able to figure out so much about Mexico through this research and applied what I learned through a discussion post on Lingro learning.
