Week 8 – Journal Entry #8: The Distortion of Hacking in Media
After watching the video, I realized how much movies and TV shows distort the reality of hacking. The expert explained that Hollywood often makes hacking look instant and effortless, with characters typing rapidly and breaking into secure systems in seconds. In reality, hacking takes time, research, and specialized knowledge.
The video also highlighted how unrealistic scenes, like hackers taking control of traffic lights or perfectly enhancing blurry images, create false expectations. These portrayals can lead people to underestimate cybersecurity threats or believe hacking is easy. Additionally, the media often glamorizes cybercriminals while ignoring the legal and ethical consequences of their actions.
While these portrayals may spark interest in cybersecurity, they also spread misinformation. The video made me realize how important it is to separate fiction from reality when it comes to cybersecurity.
