I have learned to pick up key words and gather important topics using the ambience of what I am hearing. Something that was challenging for me was actually understanding some of the words, but the more I listened, the better I understood. Reading Spanish has assisted my ability to remember and to help me recognize it later. This has also gave me plenty of  time to reread multiple sentences until I understood them. Reading in another language can be tough, but the books I listed above helped me a lot. They had texts written at my level so it was much easier to understand, and they both included learning aids to help contribute to my comprehension. I would definitely say that grasping onto it when I started reading was challenging, but as I kept going I saw myself growing and getting better.
