SPAN 202

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

The artifact of Benficios en los empleos was about benefits for working people in different countries. This artifact culture was in chapter 16 El mundo del trabajo.

The story Beneficios en los empleos was about how benefits for employees are different in the United Stated and different countries. For example in EspaƱa, employees get thirty days of vacation with pay every year. In the United States, female employees have 12 weeks of maternity leave. In this story as well, I had some challenges with some words but I just keep re-reading the story. It was great to learn about other countries benefits. I have grown with reading this assignment.

Engaging in Communities

In my occupation, I engage with a lot of different people and ethnicities. I work in a office setting where multiple Spanish speaking patients are seen. This class has taught me how to better communicate with them. I also have a co-worker that speaks Spanish and helps me with pronunciation. I love helping others when it comes translating from Spanish to English. I can not give any examples due to HIPAA laws. I have also taken part of being a team mom for my sons baseball team. I enjoy being a team mom because I get to engage with the kids on the team giving them confidence before they go to bat. I also organize sneak schedules with parents and enjoy making the banner for the team. I take pride in engaging in communities because I get to meet others and I enjoy seeing a smile on their faces when I am helping them out.

Interpersonal Communication

I did a 15 minute TalkAbroad conversation with video and audio. My conversation was with a native speaker from Yucatan, Mexico. In this assignment, I was able to learn about the city of Yucatan and my conversation partner. During this semester, I have chosen to watch the News Broadcast in Spanish.

During the TalkAbroad conversation, I grew in learning how to take my time when I’m speaking in Spanish. I have learned that when I talk quickly, I tend to get stuck on some words I’m trying to pronounce. I have exceled in reading the news headlines while watching the Spanish News by constantly listening and reading. In my discussion boards, I was able to read with a little bit more confidence. I have been able to find articles in Spanish to read which has helped me in my discussion board readings.

Presentational Speaking

In this semester, some of the presentational speaking activities I completed were in chapter 13 in Vista Higher Learning website pre-recorded oral exercise and TalkAbroad assignment. I also had the chance to speaking with family members in Dominican Republic. TalkAbroad is a site where you are able to have a tele-collaborative conversation with a native speaker from a Spanish speaking country. In the Vista Higher Learning activity they asked six questions about Yo, ambientalista?

In the Vista Higher Learning activity, I was asked six different questions about ambientaslista. As I listened to my recorded answers, I had trouble with pronouncing some words. I overcame this challenge by studying more of the vocabulary and saying them out loud while practicing. When I did my TalkAbroad conversation, the one thing I noticed when going back and listening to the audio was the rolling of the R. This come from being nervous when I’m speaking to others in Spanish. I overcame this challenge by not talking so fast and taking my time. When speaking to my family in Dominican Republic, I was able to communicate and have better understanding with them.

Presentational Writing

A presentational writing assignment that I have completed this semester is the six questions I had to come up with for my TalkAbroad tele-collaborative conversation. In addition to writing my six question, I responded to classmates on blackboard for discussion boards assignments.

My assignment for TalkAbroad conversation was to come up with six questions to ask my partner about their country. The six questions for me were a little challenging for me because I had to use some unfamiliar words that I was not accustom to. As I did this assignment, I looked up the meaning to the each of the words I was using. In my responds to my classmates post on blackboard, it was easier for me because I was able to use words that I was familiar with. I have exceled in these assignments by expanding my vocabulary while writing and speaking.

Interpretive Listening

The interpretive listening activities I have completed this semester are recordings on Vista Higher Learning website for classwork and listened to Spanish music. I have also listened to the Spanish radio station that includes commercials, music, and news broadcastings.

I have had the opportunity to listen to different activity’s for classwork this semester. The recordings have been about different cultures and on lessons that we covered in class. The challenges that I had while listening to different culture activities was the accent of when the speaker was talking. I overcame this difficulty by replaying the audio and looking up words that I did not know. I found it interesting that not everybody has the same accent when speaking the Spanish language. While listening to the Spanish radio station and music, I was able have a better understanding and meaning of different things.

Interpretive Reading

This semester some of the interpretive communication activities I read are La Foto. La foto was in chapter 13. This story was about everyday life as far as in nature.

La Foto was about a husband and wife that had gotten married. She had saw her medical doctor and he predicted that she was going to pass away before long. In knowing the prediction of what her doctor told her, her husband asked for her to take a picture to keep her beautiful memory. Once he took the photo of his wife, she pass away in seconds of him taking the photo. The husband place the photo of his wife on his night stand to remember her. At first this story was a challenge for me because there were some words I did not know. I overcame this difficulty by re-reading and looking up the meaning to the words. What I took away from the story was to always take pictures of love ones because tomorrow is never promised.
