My internship at MedStar Health urgent care has allowed me to embrace my interest in medicine and patient interaction through partnering with providers to help deliver high-quality compassionate treatment to patients and their families . As a medical scribe, my main responsibilities include managing patient files, performing documentation and charting in the EHR systems, and communicating with the physician about the patient’s information needs. On a daily basis, I collaborate with doctors, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. This job has allowed me to quickly increase my baseline knowledge of fundamental medical terminology and procedures. It is my responsibility as a scribe to record the full patient encounter from beginning to end. The patient’s history, physical exam findings, patient outcomes, lab, imaging, and x-ray results must all be included in the documentation. In this position, I’ve been able to increase my comprehension of patient data and learn how to properly input it all into the system.
During my internship, I have learned how to communicate and build relationships with the people I worked with. I learned how to introduce myself, talk about my interests, knowledge and skills with providers, as well as how to ask questions and gain a better understanding of healthcare and patient flow. Overall, this process assisted me in expanding my professional network and highlighted how important it is to create these connections and long lasting relationships. Also, I made connections with the majority of them on LinkedIn, which is undoubtedly a great professional networking site. Furthermore, this experience has helped me be more open to learning new abilities, seeking more tasks, and being eager to learn and ask questions. I believe that it is very crucial to receive professional feedback from your preceptor during this process. This is mostly due to the fact that it is imperative that I pay attention to both the positive and negative aspects of my work in order to progress and excel in my future career as a health service administrator. I learned that receiving feedback or constructive criticism throughout this experience will have a significant impact on my success and future career.
