Professional Goals
I was able to accomplish a number of personal and professional goals throughout this internship. In order to help me understand what new skills I needed to build before the internship ended, I created both long-term and short-term goals that offered a vision for my future career path. Because of how closely their organizational ideals align with both my academic and professional goals, I really appreciated and benefited from interning for this organization. I worked at MedStar Health Urgent Care and my position at Scribe America was as an Emergency Medicine Tele scribe. I was responsible for entering the provider-patient interaction into the electronic medical record while working alongside doctors as they saw patients in this capacity. I started this experience with the aim of advancing my career and developing skills that will benefit me in the future. My career goals were to gain more healthcare experience and strengthen my networking, teamwork, and communication skills. I was able to develop my skills by establishing these personal objectives and working together with team members. In addition to putting a focus on self-improvement, creating, and attaining these goals has improved my professional life and demonstrated my passion and dedication for the healthcare industry.
Relevant Courses
As a Health Service Administration student, I have been exposed to a wide range of courses throughout my undergraduate career. For instance, U.S Healthcare Delivery Systems, Ethics in Health Administration, Health Informatics, Public and Community Health Administration, Telehealth care Technology, Health Ethics & Law, Health Policy, Health Service Research Methods, and Community Health Resources and Health Promotion are all examples of relevant courses that have helped prepare me for this Internship. I worked directly with providers to help them offer patient care while transcribing a large number of physician-patient encounters, medical histories, and diagnostic test results as a scribe in an urgent care facility. Generally speaking, these courses helped me to prepare for this internship because they expanded my knowledge of the fundamentals of health service administration. I was able to observe firsthand advancements in health care delivery and the widespread adoption of virtual services. In all, taking these courses has allowed me to learn more about the delivery of healthcare incentives and has taught me new skills that I will incorporate into the workplace as a health service administrator. The course material is connected to what I have learned during the internship because I learned how to put my knowledge and skills into practice.
Skills
Through this internship, I was able to improve my communication, multitasking, self-motivation, networking, flexibility, and analytical abilities as well as my knowledge of medical terminology. It is my responsibility as a scribe to support doctors with effective and efficient care by logging the results of patient exams and evaluations. It was important to review my drafts before I turned them in to ensure that they were accurate, grammatically correct, free of errors or discrepancies, and concise. Having said that, communicating patient information clearly helped me improve both my written and verbal communication abilities. In addition, regular communication with my coworkers helped me develop my ability to communicate while also enhancing my networking skills by expanding my business-related information and building stronger connections in the workplace.
Challenges
One of the biggest difficulties I faced throughout this internship was working in a fast-paced workplace. Even though it was challenging seeing patients back-to-back, I learned how to adapt to my surroundings and be productive in order to boost efficiency, and progress. Understanding each provider’s charting style was difficult, in addition to getting used to the clinic’s fast pace. Each provider tends to have specific preferences for how they like to format their exam results and assessments. But I discovered that reviewing each provider’s preferences first before the start of each shift gave me plenty of time to feel ready for their patient visits. In the end, anytime I had a question or needed assistance, I was always able to get it from my fellow scribes and the medical staff.
Benefits
I benefited from observing patient flow, how doctors respond, and the joy of changing patients’ lives in addition to broadening my knowledge and experience in healthcare. My experience as a medical scribe has been both educational and life-changing. My understanding of how doctors make clinical decisions has significantly increased as a result.
Overall Impression & Recommendations
This internship is an excellent opportunity to obtain clinical experience before graduating, which Is why I definitely recommend it to any students that are interested. I recommend any students considering scribing as part of their internship to be open to learning and developing every day on the job, to ask lots of questions throughout the training process, and when interacting with medical professionals. Working in a busy clinic or healthcare environment can be stressful at times, but I have succeeded by being persistent, compassionate, dependable, and open to criticism. In all, I believe this experience has been life changing and has developed me in the areas of professional growth and responsibility.
