Prompt: There are two related prompts here. Write at least one paragraph addressing each prompt.
College major: What is your current major? Why did you choose it? (If you are currently undeclared or considering another major, discuss the major(s) you are considering.) Are there other majors you were (or still are) interested in, and why? If not, why are you so committed to your major? How does your coursework so far relate to your major? (You may also talk about your minor/minors you’re considering.)
Career interests: What are some possible career(s) you are currently interested in pursuing? Why are those careers interesting to you? How are they related to your major?
Ever since I was a child I never really knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My dad, who is my number one person to go to for advice, said Cybersecurity is a field that is growing everyday and is very demanding as every company needs it. My dad is also in the Cyber field and showed me what it’s like. After some time of thinking about it I decided it was what I wanted to major in in college. The careers in the cyber field make generous paychecks as well, which was a big factor for me as in the future i want to have a boat, house, truck, sports car, and a motorcycle, etc. In high school I barely put thought into it and when senior year came around I felt like I had to act fast as I didnt know what I wanted to go to college for. This led me to Cyber because its what my dad does and thinking this I felt maybe i could get my foot in the door easier because he is in the field and could network me a little bit to get me an internship, my dads cousin is also in the field and one time when we were visiting him he offered that once I get my degree he would gladly give me an internship, this would get my foot in the door and help me advance into the field getting connections that would lead to further job opportunities.
As a kid, I’ve always thought about joining the military or becoming a police officer. But when I found out how much money they make I quickly decided that wasn’t for me. My dad says i cant join any branch that would be life threatening like the Army and Marines, He said that if i were to join the military It would only be the coast guard, Navy, or Airforce. My dad was in the air force but I decided if i were to join the military It would be the Coast Guard as i’ve always loved the water and felt that it would be a fun career. There’s a quote that goes something like “find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life” and I wonder if it’s true. If what my desired pathway Cybersecurity doesn’t work out I believe that’s what I would pursue. In the Cyber field on the other hand I think I would try to get my foot in the door by getting an internship and get my security clearance which automatically opens you up to getting job opportunities working in the government. Government Jobs are amazing as they pay well and are usually the top jobs for Cyber Security, working for one of these government agencies is also a huge resume builder and looks good on your resume. I think after I graduate I could possibly join the coast guard or law enforcement and get a job in their cyber departments.
