Activities

This semester I have not had a lot of practice speaking Spanish outside of the classroom due to the fact that this class was not preformed on a college campus. I would say that I did have practice when I went to Puerto Rico with my family. Even though Puerto Rico is an American territory, on the island they primarily speak in Spanish. When I went to Puerto Rico I wanted to make sure that I was able to understand people and also speak well enough for them to understand me. I also wanted them to see that I respect their culture. To prepare for this trip I did something out of theĀ  ordinary and that is, look up Spanish listening practices on Youtube. This is not something that I would’ve done prior to taking Spanish-201. I wanted to prepare for the speed that they were going to be speaking in Puerto Rico. Without even realizing native spanish speakers tend to speak very quickly. Here in class I can repeat audios and videos as much as I want but when it comes to speaking in person I cannot do that. Not only did I want to prepare for the speed in which they were going to be speaking I wanted to make sure that I could respond to them correctly and put my Spanish critical thinking skills to use. I would say that practicing with these youtube videos definitely helped on my vacation. I am not going to say that I was proficient and understood everything that they were saying all the time because they may have used slang words that I did not know at the time but, when it comes to basic words and conversations I was able to keep up pretty well. This has definitely helped me develop my Spanish listening and speaking skills.
