For English class, there aren’t exams or quizzes that I have to take. So there isn’t a specific method of studying that I would use, however, I do have essays that we have to write. So writing notes in class and looking back at them helped me understand a lot about what I will be writing about. For History class, we have exams but it is open notes which I would take notes in class and outside of class. Because I would use the notes to study before the exams and during the exams since it’s an open-notes exam. For Intro to Chemistry, I would take notes before class and use those notes to study. I would also make flashcards to remember the terms and elements that we have to remember. I would look at them at least every night, and whenever I remember a card I would leave that card out and go on to the next one. For Chemistry Lab, we have post labs that we have to do so I would use those to study for quizzes that we take in the class. I would review the topic and try to understand the topic by talking to myself. For Sociology class, we have a lot of terms that we have to remember for quizzes and exams, so I would use Quizlet a lot to study for them. Because I can match terms to the definition and understand the topic.
One class that I am doing well in is Sociology since I enjoy learning about the individual and the society around me. One method that is helping me a lot is making Quizlet. Since in Sociology, there are a lot of terms and theories that I have to remember. So making flashcards in Quizlet will help me remember those terms faster and easier. Plus on Quizlet, there are matching games and quizzes that are set up for you to practice. I would usually make the Quizlet 2 day prior to the quiz and then I’ll have one day to study. I find it’s better for me to study under pressure because it helps me recall my memories a lot faster. I know it’s not good but that’s what works for me.
One class that I experienced challenges in is Chemistry Lab. This is because I did not do great on the latest Quiz. I think next time I would go to tutor hour and fully understand about labs rather than looking through and not understand it and wink through the quiz. I think I will spend at least 30 minutes looking over the topic every day so that when it is time to take quizzes and exams I can be fully prepared rather than winking it. The aspect that I need to pay more attention to is if the information actually makes sense to me and if it does then can I apply it to my labs. I need to pay less time doing the work and not understand it.
One technique that I could try in class is strengthening my thinking skills because I can use them for my chemistry class, for example looking at the topic from another angle. When I look at things from a different angle and perspective I feel like it would be easier for me to understand the material. Also, breaking information down into smaller parts is another way to strengthen my thinking skills during class. Like when I am confused about solving half-lives in class rather than using the equation that the teacher provide I can draw it out and break it down into parts that I can understand. If I don’t do that and try to solve it in equation form, then I could easily make a mistake and don’t know where I made the mistake is. So if I try to strengthen my thinking skills, it can help me succeed in the classroom and understand the material a lot better.
One technique outside of class that I would be forming study groups. Because if I don’t understand a topic from a specific class and then when I form a study group one of my peers might understand the material and teach it back to me. But if none of us understand the topic then we can work together and try to figure out the material. There is a saying “ Two heads are better than one” so, with the help of others, I will not feel the stress of trying to figure the material by myself, because I now have people to help me with it. But I have to be aware that my group will not get off-topic and that we have a goal to strive for. I know that study groups aren’t for everyone but I feel like it will help me because I am a hard worker and like to help others around me. If my peers don’t understand the topic then I would try my best to teach it back to them.
