The first 100 hours of my internship have been extremely informative. We started the New Year off with a group reading of “Our Iceberg is melting,” which is a story about a colony of penguins who must adapt to change as their iceberg, which is their home, is melting. Faced with these challenges, the group of penguins must collaborate and work together as a team. Within this story, an eight-step process for successful change management was introduced in an engaging and fun way. Reading this story laid the foundation for our teams to come together for our group projects/ presentations. I was assigned as team lead for our health equity project. For this project, we needed to collaborate and research ways Riverside Health Systems can promote community health equity. Being that health equity is a broad topic, we narrowed it down to focusing on mental health equity within the youth, primarily focusing on mental health curriculums in public schools in downtown Newport News. I have gained communication and leadership skills during the first 100 hours of this internship. For this project, we needed to communicate with internal and external leaders. Also, I constantly communicated with my team and ensured everyone knew what was expected of them. I also communicated with leaders and our subject matter experts, providing them with updates as we progressed throughout the project. Lastly, some leadership skills I have gained are empathy, delegation, and problem-solving.
