Riverside Health Systems is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1915. Riverside Health Systems extends various programs and services, including diagnostics, prevention, primary care, rehabilitation, etc. Riverside Health Systems has 12 locations in eastern Virginia, including urgent care, hospitals, medical centers, specialty clinics, etc. Riverside’s mission statement is to “care for others as we would care for those we love – to enhance their well-being and improve their health:” Their core values include teamwork, diversity, respect, deep community involvement, and trust earned through safety, quality of care, and service. I have the pleasure of interning within the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department. During this internship, I will learn how to be a diverse leader within the healthcare community at Riverside Health Systems. I will achieve this by attending leadership development courses, partnering with business leaders on assigned projects, and job shadowing different departments within Riverside.  My preceptor for this internship is Ericka Ward, DD, BSN, RN. She is a proud veteran who served in the U.S. Army and obtained her BS in Nursing. She was a nurse for 33 years and was also an internship coordinator. She now serves as the IDEAL internship coordinator/facilitator.
