Leadership

Students develop relationship skills such as collaboration and interpersonal communication, problem solving, conflict resolution, and change management.

During your Leadership course (as identified in DegreeWorks) or co-curricular experience (Army ROTC, Diversity Institute, Emerging Monarchs, Freshman Summer Institute, Leadership Certificate from the LSI Leadership Lecture Series, Monarch Leaders Retreat, Navy ROTC, ODU Comprehensive Leadership Program, Women’s Institute for Leadership Development), you may have done some of the following:

  • Collaborate and communicate with team members to work towards a common goal
  • Demonstrate planning and project management to achieve a goal
  • Exhibit responsible and ethical decision-making and personal integrity
  • Engage with a variety of leadership skills such as: effectively leading change, resolving conflict, problem solving, and motivating others

Reflection Activities

First, clearly identify and describe your Leadership course or co-curricular experience. Then, select and incorporate evidence that demonstrates you had some of the experiences suggested above. To do so, you will need to complete at least 2 of the reflection activities listed below. As this is a digital portfolio, avoid relying only on writing.  Consider providing pictures, video, or other media to demonstrate skills obtained or enhanced by this experience. You can use video to respond to some of the prompts, so long as you also include materials you produced during the experience.

  1. Provide an example of a project in which you set a goal and achieved it in collaboration with others. Reflect on how you developed a plan, worked with others, resolved issues, and used responsible and ethical decision-making in order to pursue this goal. What might you do differently when faced with a similar situation in the future? Include a PDF of this project.
  2. Provide an example of a project/experience that demonstrates your communication skills. What obstacles in communication did you face? How did you resolve this? How might you draw on this experience in the future to design effective communication plans with a team? What might you do differently when faced with a similar situation in the future? Include a PDF or other visual representation of this project.
  3. Reflect on a leadership role you have held outside of your Leadership course/co-curricular experience (e.g., student organization leader, work experience in which you have led others, etc.). How did/does your leadership role connect to principles you learned in your course/co-curricular experiences? How have you demonstrated leadership skills within your role, such as effectively leading change, resolving conflict, problem solving, and motivating others? Provide specific examples and demonstrations of your work (e.g., photos, videos, documents, and presentations).
  4. Include a one minute reflection video regarding your leadership course/co-curricular experience. What were key experiences and concepts you will take away from this process? How will this be useful to you in the future, especially as you consider future settings in which you may regularly collaborate and communicate with others?
  5. Reflect on an assignment or activity you participated in during this leadership class/co-curricular experience that helped you learn more about yourself as a leader/team member. What did you learn about your strengths and areas for improvement? How have you been able to apply what you have learned in other settings? How might you apply these concepts to future settings?

If one or more of the prompts don’t seem to directly address your experience, please feel free to interpret them to some degree, allowing you to respond in an authentic way. This is your experience; these prompts are meant to help you share it in a way that is useful to multiple audiences.
