Problem solving refers to when I must deal with a problem whose solution is not immediately apparent. This can include a tool that is not working properly, an error that cannot be identified, or a team that is not collaborating efficiently. Python automation involves the creation of scripts and tools that can perform data cleaning, web scraping and repetitive tasks that would otherwise be completed manually. In digital forensics I have learned how to analyze a system, recreate events, and document those events effectively. Below you will find a brief explanation of each of these skills, followed by evidence of that skill.

Problem Solving

Problem solving refers to dealing with a problem where the solution is not immediately apparent. In cybersecurity this is most of the job. Tools, systems and threats are constantly evolving and thus there is rarely a ready made solution. First I attempt to identify the actual problem, then I try a solution and modify as necessary. I have used this skill to solve technical problems such as identifying errors and dealing with tools that do not operate the way they should, and also to solve interpersonal problems such as getting development and security teams to work together efficiently. I have found that these can be dealt with similarly – by breaking the problem into pieces, being patient and remaining curious. Below you will find examples of this.

Getting Security and Development on the Same Page, Internship :My first issue with a team was not about coding, it was about cross interaction between security and development. I fixed this by setting up regular meetings and explaining my research and discoveries. I also walked both ways through the code to keep everyone on the same page.

Problem-Solving-Security-and-Development

Reflection Paper 2, CYSE 368 : I’ve encountered situations where my web Scraper has failed multiple times during the initial attempt. Rather than speculating, I debug through the failures. I’ve done the same with compatibility issues in the code used by my teammates.

annotated-Reflection20Paper202.docx

Sword vs. Shield, CYSE 301: Cybersecurity Technique and Operations :I have never worked with network data before. At first I found it very difficult. I used Wireshark to gradually narrow down a capture to find a login in plain text and a file being transferred.

Sword-V-Shield

Python Automation

Python automation is the key to transforming repetitive manual tasks into automated tools. It plays a vital role in cybersecurity. Security involves a significant amount of data and number of alerts that no one can manually analyze. By automating the repetitive tasks, analysts can focus on the actual issues at hand. I have created scripts and applications that scrape data from websites, clean and format data and interface with services such as Google Drive. I have also gained experience in creating code that can handle errors and messy data. I also consider how tools handle sensitive data such as credentials. This is important as I look towards application security. Below you will find the tools I created and the problem they address.

Milestone 1 and 2 combined to show both project description and code, CYSE 250: I have created a quiz client-server system in Python that can take over the role of a quiz master. This system can create new users and handle logins, load in questions from a file, mark answers, keep score and deliver the results to a number of clients using a basic cipher for the communication.

CYSE250_FIFA_Quiz_Game_Project

Av Stager Project, Internship:I created AV Stager, a Python utility used by the media group to automate the management of video and audio content delivery. AV Stager links to Google Drive and can cross-reference files to a row in a spreadsheet (even if file names don’t match), populate the links and generate the transcript books. All file linking and link copying is performed in a single process and any items that are not successfully linked can be quickly inspected.

AV_Stager_Writeup

Reflection Paper 1, CYSE 360: During my first 50 hours as a data and coding intern I have utilized Python for data cleaning and organization as well as developing small scripts to automate repetitive tasks such as reading from multiple spreadsheets. In the area of cybersecurity this translates to incident response where determining the method by which an attack occurred is key to preventing future occurrences. I emphasize methodical investigation by tracing evidence step by step and recording the evidence and its relevance. The analysis provided demonstrates my approach to an investigation and my method for presenting the results of the investigation.

Incident Response Report, REAL Incident I responded to

I responded to a remote-access attack on a Windows PC. The malware was installed using AnyDesk and was a persistent malware installation tool. Using a cyclic UAC messagebox I located the malware files. The files were then identified using timestomping. The startup persistence was disabled and then the malware was deleted. All systems were scanned using Defender to ensure complete removal. The incident was then related to the NIST SP 800-61 incident lifecycle. Finally I documented actions that could be improved such as evidence preservation prior to removal.

Incident_Response_Report

Digital Forensics Examination Report, CYSE 407: I created a forensic examination report for a simulated federal investigation of a laptop and an iPhone.
