Span 475

This course is a writing concentrated course that was intended to help Spanish majors with key ideas of basic hypotheses, scholarly investigations, and the discipline. The class urged us to investigate important subjects connected with Hispanic writing and human expression. Our professor had us break down every step that goes into writing a 10-page paper by making each step a new assignment. Below are some of the courses of action that were taken for this paper.

Prospectus

This assignment was called Prospectus, this assignment allowed us to plan out an idea of what exactly was going to be talked about in our paper. What points did we want to hit, and what “side” we were taking on said topic? Not only was it a “what” we wanted to be on our essay but a why? Are we passionate about this topic? This allowed our writing process for the other assignments to go a lot smoother because we already had an idea of what it was we wanted to write about and made sure we had a topic that we knew we could talk about for days on end.

Annotated Bibliography-

As my professor always stressed having a strong annotated bibliography will set you up for success. Which I didn’t believe until this assignment. Being able to have a strong line of sources lined up with summaries of what exaclty it is talking about will make writing your paper that much easier. You know what you want to write about, you’ve read the articles so you have more information in your head, you just don’t remember what souces exactly mentioned it? Look at your bibliography, and it will make the process a lot easier.

Video reflection of Final-

Aside from the essay draft, I think this assignment had to be one of my favorite and most helpful assignments I did all semester. I struggle when it comes to expressing myself on paper sometimes, however, I am a lot better at doing it orally. With this video, I was about to express what I wasn’t able to on paper. My draft was a draft for a reason, however with being able to talk about my paper out loud and talk about the points I was trying to reach; I know I excelled a lot more in my final paper because I was able to go back to the video and hear myself and say “oh okay what is what I am trying to say”.

Reflection

When it comes to the experiences outside of the classroom that relate to this class, there are a handful I can think of. As a whole, this class allowed me to practice my writing in Spanish a lot more and allowed me to practice expressing myself in Spanish better. I did a practicum this semester and because I was practicing writing in Spanish so much in this class, when I had to translate and write a note for someone at the clinic I was able to do so with less hesitation than I would have before. As another example, my essay topic in class resonated with me in my outside life. I talk about it a lot in my essay but I believe that this essay taught me things about myself that I wasn’t aware of, and where I stand when it comes to certain topics. When talking about discipline and about how this course relates to other classes, I think overall this class helped in all my classes in all different ways. I don’t just say this to take the cheap route out, but because this class was so writing intensive, my Spanish skills in reading and writing have improved tremendously. This class has not only allowed me to improve in other classes but also in my day to day. Again since my topic in this class was so special to me I can transfer what I learned into my everyday life. I now know where I stand when it comes to talking to my nieces and nephews about me and the LGBTQ+ community. As to what I discovered in this class that I can use in the future, is my annotated bibliography (which is attached above). With all this information I now know what I should and/or should not do with it comes to me being a teacher or being a parent to kids that want to learn about the queer community. For example, now I know that from the age of 6-12 kids will start to question themselves as to who they are, and what their role is in this world is. Now I know that when my kids have reached that age group I have to be mindful that the questions will start to follow.
