Post Colonial Theory

There are not many theories regarding postcolonial criticism. Edward Said is the primary contributor regarding the Post-colonial theory, also referred to as Orientalism, took off in the 70′-90’s. This theory is mainly based on the false belief or concept fabricated by Western thinkers to enforce the idea of an ‘other’ in contrast to the ‘civilized west’. Said focuses on the fact that the consequences of colonialism are still persisting in the form of oppression, racism, chaos, corruption, civil wars, and bloodshed, which permeates throughout many ex-colonies. Additionally, The powerful colonizer has stripped many individuals/tribes of their culture and language to impose a language and a culture that they prefer or deem as superior. Thus, the Oriental peoples have not only been ignored and
distorted but have been lost from their heritage and homelands.
Post colonial theory offers us a framework for examining the history, culture, literature and modes of ideological beliefs within minorities. Essentially, this form of criticism draws from multiple perspectives in order to form another viewpoint.  Addinitonaly, post colonialism itself analyzes literature produced by cultures that developed in response to colonial domination such as Africa, Asia, South America etc. from the first point of colonial contact to the present. Post colonial literature is essentially the viewpoint of oppressed minorities based on the aftermath of colonization. When using the post colonial perspective to analyze a text one can see how the text itself reinforces ideologies concerning racial superiority brought on by the oppression of minorities through colonization. Furthermore, this theory focuses on the continuous power struggle between cultures and the intersection of cultures which results in multiculturalism. Essentially, this theory provides us with a perspective that analyzes the ethical, and political concerns about cultural identity, power, race and language.  When asking this theory certain questions the psychoanalytic can be used to analyze the mind of the oppressed and well as the oppressors to get to cause of division.
