Jaques Derrida’s theory of Deconstruction focuses on the structure of fundamental concepts, language, and ideologies that we as humans abide by. Essentially, this theory dismantles the structure of traditional modes of thought. The theory itself offers us a new way of viewing concepts we find familiar or even apart of who who we are as unstable and ever changing. Deconstruction tears down the “normal” societal structure to reveal the reality of life which allows the mind to become whatever it imagines, whether that be apart or outside of normal society. In addition to, Philosopher Gary Rolfe has shared his insight on Derrida’s theory describing deconstruction as nothing. Rolfe has believed that it is not a method of any sort but the process begins with the critic themselves. Often times text do not say what it intends to mean, the reader/critic must decide the texts intention through deconstruction.
Overall, the theory of deconstructive criticism proves our social construct to be just that, a construct we have deemed to be valuable due to the majority’s opinion.The theory allows one to understand that there is no such thing as a stable solid meaning for something. Our interpretation is ever changing, even social constructs we live by today. How we view society is our own perception which is based off what we’ve learned our society to be and function as. For example, just because we have learned that the man is the breadwinner and the wife stays home does not make it stable truth. That is just what we’ve come up with as a society and deemed it normal for each family to live within that social construct,and when someone goes outside of that it is deemed not “normal.” For me deconstruction has always been deemed a problematization of the foundation of law, morality and politics. For the theorist, Derrida, it was both foreseeable and desirable that studies of deconstructive style should culminate in the problematic of law and justice. Deconstruction is therefore a means of interrogating the relationship between the two. Deconstruction highlights the fact that as humans we have an inherent desire to place meaning at the centre of presence. Thus, philosophy is driven by a desire for the certainty associated with the existence of an absolute truth, or an objective meaning that makes sense of our place in the world. Derrida terms this desire ‘logocentrism’. Its effect is the placing of one particular term or concept, such as justice, religion or morality, at the centre of all efforts at theorizing or interrogating meaning. This theory is extremely interesting in such as way that it can be applied to just about anything.
