Queer Theory

Adrienne Rich, gay theorist and American poet, who is known for her political radicalism and explorations in feminism and lesbianism.  In 1980 she wrote an essay titled “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Experience”  in which she analyzed a number of books and their lack of inclusion or acknowledgment of lesbianism.  She argues that this lack of acknowledgement forces women into “compulsory heterosexuality” through epistemic violence by men. In addition to although there are not many other queer/gay theorists, in 1955 a group of women led by Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon assembled the Daughters of Bilitis (DOB), which can be referred to as the first national organization for lesbians. Members of DOB organized for social and political purposes. Their goal was to  end the sense of isolation many lesbians felt within the community, region and on a national scale. They stood for their legal right to  increase their social acceptance.Lesbian criticism address issues related to both sexism and heteroism… lesbian critics must deal with the psychological, social, economic, and political oppression fostered not by patriarchal male privilege, but by heterosexual privilege as well. This is a double whammy here. The queer theory incorporates the perspective of gay and lesbian theory. Lesbian criticism  addresses what individuals face being lesbian in a heterisexual priveleged world today. Queer theory defines individual sexuality as fluid and dynamic rather than solid and at a standstill such a hetersexualism.  Heterosexualism is perceived to be straight rather than ‘fluid’ or a collective of possible sexualities. When utilizing the queer perspective, but more specifically, the lesbian perspective to analyze a piece of literature. one can see how some character’s oppress their true sexuality opposed to the normal heterosexual view that most text try to portray. By taking a look at this perspective through a post-colonial perspective one can gain further knowledge of not only the world itself but the characters inside each text. This will help to acknowledge the oppression and the privileging which takes place in everyday society.
