Three ways you can spot a fake website are

  1. Check the domain name and URL
    1. Hovering over the provided link to reveal the actual link is a very easy way to spot if they match what is expected. If you still have doubts about it you can always use a search engine to look up the real website as well and avoid the suspect link.
  2. Inspect the security certificate
    1. SSL and TLS certifications are certifications that verify the website and build trust. These certifications verify the identity and encrypt the connection which protects the data being transmitted. If the certificate is not verified web browser should alert the end user of possible danger.
  3. Look up the domain age
    1. All websites must register their domain name. Looking up a suspicious domain name with the registrar and finding that it is only a few days old is a red flag to not trust stated domain name.

There are also several types of scam websites such as clone websites which imitate legitimate companies. Fake online store or sellers which imitate e-stores and try to get you to enter your financial information. Phising websites which have links distributed and imitate legitimate senders except for some change to the URL.

If you ever have a suspicious email or link sent in any way never click the link! Use one of the ways discussed earlier to examine and verify the link.
