What have I experienced in the first fifty hours of this clinic?
First, I would have to acknowledge that this clinic was not what I had
anticipated in my mind. Reading the description of the internship clinic and
some of the questions when applying, lead me to anticipate a more direct
involvement or role within small businesses. An example of my thoughts, for
instance we would go and perform a risk audit or assessment on their
systems to identify weaknesses and then provide recommendations. Thus, I
was a little surprised to find that we only interview the client before giving
recommendations and education.
Second, I found that the clinic at the beginning was a bit disorganized and
surprised to find the increased use of Google’s One Drive versus Canvas.
Finding out that this is only the second time running this clinic helps make
sense of some of the disorganization. My only real concern with using
something like One Drive is how much access everyone is allowed to
everything else. I personally prefer my group and my own work to be isolated
to prevent plagiarism and theft of ideas/thoughts. I also feel like it’s not my
place to see or access teacher related documentation. I understand and can
appreciate the accessibility and shareability of resources from one location,
but I am just used to that from Canvas.
The ethics discussion also seemed very glancing and probably could have
used the time to discuss something more related to what we are going to be
doing. There seems to be a large emphasis on a presentation at the end of
the class. Perhaps a discussion of how to be good presenters and not just
how to sell cybersecurity.
Design lab was a pretty cool and a good preview of what my group presents
like. I understand why we did the activities for design lab but I found that
with the scenario the group got a little lost with the scope and that I believe
proved a challenge as a whole. Me and my group refocused for our design
lab which allowed us to ideate and come up with a plan.
All in all it’s the start or a group project and its just getting the ball rolling
and adjusting to everyone. I have had a good experience thus far and am
looking forward to what else is to come.
