There are several overlaps between criminal justice and cybercrime. I think the line between criminal justice and cybercrime has become blurred overtime and with the advancement in technology. Cyber technology creates opportunities for criminal behavior, this is where the justice system plays a role and connection to the term cybercrime.

One way they overlap is in determining interventions and responses to cyber offenders. Criminological studies can help find patterns surrounding the sanctions and if sentences are effective. Another way criminal justice and cybercrime are interconnected is through digital forensics. Digital forensics is the investigation of cyber, computer, or electronic types of cybercrimes. The evolution of digital forensics stems from many criminal justice professionals. Criminal justice also provides a framework in the development, researching, and interpreting cyber law. Cybercrime is woven into criminal justice. The field of criminal justice has been around a long time and cybercrime is fairly new in comparison. I think the field of criminal justice is still trying to properly regulate and create appropriate laws/penalties for cyber crimes.

This overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime relate to many other disciplines discussed in this class. Module 6: Cybersecurity, Technology, and Workplace Behaviors, introduced us to the differences and similarities between white-collar crime and cybercrime. In Module 12: Cybercrime and Justice, we went a step further and examined the connections between cybercrime and criminal justice. Module 14, Cybervictimization, provides an overview of the different cyber crimes such as cyber fraud, digital piracy, cyber terror and cyber war. We learned from studies done that more than 90% of cyber offenders, when convicted, go to jail or prison. This module also discussed police role in cybercrime. In larger police departments, different police respond to different types of cybercrime. This is a telling sign of the increase rate of cyber crimes.
