Computers and technology have made life both easier and safer. Although technology brings numerous benefits to society, it also brings a host of problems. People have become increasingly reliant on technology. I will discuss three ways that computers have made the world safer and three ways that computers have made the world less safe.
Three ways computers have made the world safer
- Emergency Response: Computers and technology have greatly enhanced emergency response and public safety. With the advancement in technology, response times are quicker because emergency services are able to receive and process information rapidly. Communication tools provide automated alert systems and enable critical real-time information sharing.
- Healthcare: It goes without saying that computers have revolutionized medical care. Computers and technology have improved access to healthcare. Telemedicine, for example, lets your healthcare provider care for you without an in-person office visit. This reduces emergency room visits and lowers overall cost for patients and providers. Diagnostics technology is another area that has improved in all areas – speed, agility, and accessibility – with the advancement in computers.
- Transportation: The final topic I am going to touch on that computers have made safer is transportation. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in vehicles use technologies and computer algorithms to increase the safety of a driving vehicle. ADAS enhances road safety by providing features such as adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning. Air traffic control systems rely on computers for precise navigation and coordination for the safety of air travel.
Three ways computers have made the world less safe
- Cybersecurity Threats: The growing use of computers and technology has given rise to cybersecurity threats. There are many different types of cybersecurity threats such as malware, ransomware, phishing, and data breaching. Cyber threat actors exploit vulnerabilities with the goal to steal sensitive information and disrupt computer systems.
- Privacy Concerns: There are privacy concerns with personal sensitive information being stored electronically. There is potential for personal information being exposed or misused. Unauthorized access, identity theft, and online tracking/surveillance are all contributing factors to an unsafe technological world.
- Technology Dependence: There are harmful effects of technology dependency like depression, anxiety, and adverse effects on memory. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV), even has a term, Nomophobia, to describe the fear of being detached from mobile phone connectivity.
