Old Dominion University offers several majors that relate to cybersecurity such as computer science, criminal justice, sociology, and psychology. These four majors all come together in some form when on the job.
The line between criminal justice and cybersecurity has become blurred with time and the advancement in technology. With cybercrime being fairly new, The branch of digital forensics combines criminal justice and cybersecurity. Digital forensics is the investigation of cyber, computer, or electronic types of cybercrime.
Sociology and psychology both play a role in cybersecurity by delving into the human factor. There needs to be an understanding of human behaviors to properly train users and design security systems. Verizon’s 2023 Data Breach Investigations Report, found that “74% of all breaches include the human element, with people being involved either via error, privilege misuse, use of stolen credentials or social engineering.”
