Four ethical issues associated with storing electronic information about individuals are privacy concerns, security breaches, mass surveillance, and data accessibility.

Privacy concerns go hand in hand with storing electronic information about individuals. The control, storage, and usage of data has been a huge privacy issue for a long time. An individual may be concerned about the invasion of privacy and their personal information being exposed or misused.

When storing electronic information, there is always a risk of security breaches. Ethical concerns become apparent when an organization fails to implement proper security measures, leading to a breach in security. Security breaches are harmful to both individuals and the organizations involved. They violate personal privacy and trust, and can also lead to financial and reputational damage to the organization. A security breach has the potential risk of sensitive personal data being exposed and getting into the wrong hands.

Another ethical issue that can arise when storing electronic information about individuals is the balance between security and individual freedoms in regards to mass surveillance. Monitoring personal communications, online activities, and location data may violate the right to privacy.

The last ethical issue I am going to touch on is data accessibility and sharing. Organizations have an ethical responsibility to protect stored electronic information from unauthorized access. Unauthorized access to personal data can lead to identity theft and fraud. It can also affect the accuracy and integrity of the data. Personal information should only be accessible to those who have a need to know; think of the policy of least privilege.

Individuals have the right for transparency and privacy when it comes to personal information. An example of a business partaking in unethical behavior is the 2016 Uber breach. Uber failed to publicly disclose the cybersecurity attack more than a year after it took place.
