How can you tell if your computer is safe? Well, for starters an individual can go over a few questions to see where their system is at from a security standpoint. These questions can help an individual look at what they have and see where they may be lacking in security.

What devices do you have that need protecting?

What data do you have that is important to you?

What data do you have that is valuable to others?

What level of inconvenience is equal to the value of your data?

Is what you’re doing enough to secure your computer?

There are several ways to ensure your computer is as safe as possible, but as we know, there is no such thing as 100% safe. Keeping your system, software, and applications all up-to-date is crucial in keeping your computer safe. Regularly updating your system to patch vulnerabilities is one of the most effective controls to prevent a threat actor from gaining access. There have been numerous security breaches stemming from failing to patch a vulnerability such as the 2017 Equifax breach.

Utilizing antivirus and anti-malware software is another way to keep your computer safe. Performing regular full-system scans will check for any potential threats. Installing a firewall allows you to monitor and control incoming and outgoing network traffic. Usually, the operating system will have a firewall built-in and automatically turned on. You will also want to ensure you have a secure Wi-Fi Connection and system monitoring tools.

On a basic level, an individual should practice safe web browsing, use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication. Employing regularly scheduled backups and staying on top of cybersecurity best practices can also provide security for your computer and data. Lastly, defense in depth is a layered security strategy providing a holistic approach to minimize risks.
