Ranking motives from 1-7 in order
- Entertainment
- Boredom
- Recognition
- Multiple reasons
- Money
- Revenge
- Political
I ranked entertainment as making the least sense because there are numerous ways to find entertainment without resorting to committing cybercrime. Engaging in cybercrime not only impacts your future negatively but also harms others in the process.
I ranked Boredom top 2 for making the least sense of cybercrimes that often involve harm to individuals, organizations, or society. Hacking, fraud, or other forms of cybercrime can cause financial, emotional, and reputational damage to victims. Committing such acts out of boredom disregards ethical and moral principles as well and Boredom can be an opportunity for personal growth, creativity, or relaxation if channeled positively. Committing cybercrimes not only wastes time and energy but also prevents individuals from using their time more productively or constructively.
I ranked recognition as top 3 due to the fact gaining recognition through cybercrime typically results in a negative reputation. Instead of being celebrated, cybercriminals are often condemned and vilified by the public and the media.
I ranked money as one of the top 5 because there are legal and ethical ways to address financial needs or hardships, such as seeking employment, exploring educational opportunities, or accessing social services. Committing cybercrime is not the only option, and there are better alternatives to address financial difficulties.
I ranked 6 as the most reasonable, even though it is still not a smart choice. Some individuals may resort to cybercrime as a form of deterrence, hoping that by causing harm or damage to their target, they can prevent future perceived wrongdoings or instances of bullying.
Last but not least, I ranked politics as 7, as it appears to be the most reasonable factor. Many people commit political cybercrimes to advance their ideological agendas, targeting government institutions, political parties, or individuals whose views they oppose.
