With the ever rising popularity of being connected online, there’s so much data to be collected and stored from people using different technologies. There are some issues that arise with this data. There’s four issues that I think of first. 1. Companies using this data inappropriately. 2. Companies selling people’s data without their knowledge to third-party companies for monetization. 3. Companies keeping data for longer than needed. 4. Data breaches that won’t be shared with people who have lost their data. One thing that we can easily see is that there are a lot of companies that don’t have many ethics. Many companies, specifically American companies, put profits and their public image over ethics. Something that can arise because of this are companies not caring about your data. They don’t necessarily see it as your private data but something they can use to make more profits. I know this is starting to sound pretty glum, but this is sometimes the reality. Be careful with your data and be aware of the company that has your data, maybe research what the company has done with data in the past, research their data policies or whatever will help you understand what’s going on with your data. These issues are being solved and companies are trying to to protect data more than they have in the past because they don’t want to lose customers and lose that business. It does seem to be getting better but there are still issues with data not being protected the best way it could be. The issues I mentioned above with data being sold, being used inappropriately, and such, we have to be careful and be aware of the risks involved with having these companies holding our data. Companies and people, us, can always improve with data protection.
