Technology has provided more ways for people to deviate in the workplace. But what does deviate mean? The definition of deviate is, “to stray especially from a standard, principle, or topic.” So how has cyber technology created more opportunities for workplace deviance? With technology being as advanced as it is, it provides far more opportunities for disgruntled employees to cause harm to a company. One way this could happen is an employee destroying a companies defenses leaving them open for an attack. An employee could take important documentation and post it online for attackers to take and leave the company potentially harmed. These problems weren’t necessarily an issue before we’ve evolved to the point in technology that we’re at today. Before, it wasn’t as big as an issue because everything wasn’t as connected as it is today. So being able to harm a company wasn’t as easy, because there weren’t networks to leave open to attacks, there wasn’t a centralized place to put this information for people that are actively looking for ways to harm certain companies. Another example of workplace deviance might be cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is something that has came to be with the rise of the internet. It’s something that we’ve all seen, and it’s something that a lot of us have ignored. Companies do have policies in place to try and prevent cyberbullying but there are still many employees who still do cyberbullying. Employees doing things like this especially against other employees are great examples of workplace deviance. Another example of workplace deviance would be an employee stealing data and selling this data. All of these things are examples of workplace deviance. Things like this couldn’t have happened as easily as it does now with the emergence of cyber. These things are something to watch out for in our day of age.
