ATA5:
I really enjoyed assignment 5, doing the tasks and writing it. They weren’t big tasks, but they were big enough to put a smile on not just my face, but those around me. This assignment really helped me reflect on the quote “it’s the little things that matter,” because it is true. Somebody could be having an awful morning/day, and are looking forward to their coffee, and hearing that somebody paid for them can turn their morning or day around. Even the simple tasks of holding the door open for people can help prevent any negative impacts on their day. I know that when people see me walking behind them about to go through the same door and they don’t hold it for me, it kind of puts a damper on my day because they couldn’t have the courtesy or respect to hold it for a few more seconds. Overall this whole assignment really stood out to me and helped me open my eyes that no matter how big or small your gesture is, people will be so appreciative of it and you can help turn a bad day into a good day. Once you do an act of kindness, it’s like a domino effect: others will do something nice for somebody else because of something you started.

Assignment 3 was such a touchy subject for me to write about because it is a grey area where people have so many different opinions, that arguments almost always break out. I’ve been around people that say racial slurs, I don’t condone it at all, but I can’t tell them not to say it because of our freedom of speech amendment. See Michael Richards’ use a racial slur against someone for talking during his show, which obviously was boring and very uninteresting, shows that even in the 2000’s, there are STILL racist people out there, and for what? This paper assignment caused me to feel so many different emotions because people are still racists, using vulgar racial slurs, and are trying to teach their kids that judging people based off of their skin color is normal.

I really enjoyed working on assignment 2. I always go through my photos and look back on the memories I am able to capture and can remember when and where almost every photo was taken. I never thought to reflect on how much I have changed from the picture to now, until this assignment. I used a specific timeline of the past seven or so years of my life-freshman year of high school to my junior year in college because this was the biggest area where I changed the most. Seeing what I was feeling thinking at a certain time in high school, to what I feel and think in the present, is completely different. If I was told in my earlier high school days that I would be attending ODU, have the best possible relationship with my mom, have an amazing boyfriend, and a close group of girlfriends I could rely on, I would say you’re crazy. That’s why it really hit me how much I have changed in just a short few years. I chose Module 6 to be a possible representative visual image because it categorizes my top five traits and is just a preview into the type of person I am.

Assignment one was a bit tricky in my opinion. Trying to find or come up with examples of each heuristic that weren’t listed in the book, but I managed. I learned that there are four different heuristics for different things or circumstances. It was kind of neat to learn about them and the different examples that can be used in every day life. It made me think about the questionnaire we had to ask a few people about regarding similarities and differences with people. We can look at somebody and maybe categorize them, a representative heuristic, but we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Just because somebody looks different or not somebody you think you could be friends with, you may be wrong since you could have a lot more in common with them than you think-which could lead to a possible relationship. I felt this assignment was relevant to me because I use at least one heuristic every day and didn’t even know it. Now, whenever I use a heuristic, I joke with my friends about it, and they look at me all crazy because they don’t understand, but at least I do. Like I said, module 3 really stood out to me because you may judge people on their appearance, but you could have so much in common with them, and that is why I chose it as my visual image.
