After completing the Social Media Disorder (SMD) scale, I reflected on my score and how social media affects my daily life. My score was relatively low, indicating that while I use social media regularly, it doesn’t significantly interfere with my responsibilities or well-being. However, I found some of the items on the scale particularly interesting, especially those related to neglecting responsibilities, unsuccessful attempts to reduce usage, and feeling restless when not using social media. These questions really highlight how excessive social media use can mirror addiction-like behaviors.
I think different patterns of social media disorder are found across the world due to cultural, social, and economic factors. In some countries, social media is deeply integrated into daily communication, work, and entertainment, making it harder for people to step away. In other regions, limited internet access or cultural norms may discourage excessive use.
