After completing assignment five, I learned two things. The first thing I learned is there are various things that can influence a person’s health. For instance, socioeconomic factors and lifestyle risks such as income, occupation, obesity, unhealthy dieting, and minimal physical activity could all influence a person’s health. I also learned it’s important to appreciate the opportunities and necessities America has to offer. For instance, the United States has one of the most prestigious health care fields in the world. People from all over the world travel to the U.S. to be treated by their doctors. Their health care system consists of various highly trained professionals, cutting-edge techniques and equipment, and access to various clinical and rehabilitative services. However, other countries are not so fortunate. Barbados, for instance, does not have access to all these necessities, lacking proper equipment and the appropriate amount of staff. However, unlike America, the prices for medical attention are much lower. America’s health care is very costly, which is why there are numerous Americans today, including me, living without some form of health insurance. Thus, although America has some disadvantages, it’s important to value the materials we have access to now.

After completing assignment four, I learned the media plays a powerful role in stereotyping. For instance, by stereotyping, the media can have harmful effects on a person’s mental and physical health. For example, a lingerie ad displaying only slim or skinny models can cause a woman to think she has to be slim or skinny in order to fit in with others. Thus, people must learn to think carefully and independently about the messages in advertisements. By learning the concept of stereotypes and the power advertisers have to perpetuate or fight stereotypes, people will begin to view advertisements with a critical lens. As a result, people will no longer allow media to influence their way of life.

After reading Robert Khol’s thirteen values, I learned how important it is to have equality. For instance, there are various people in third word countries who are considered inferior to others. For example, women in Lebanon do not receive the equal pay, inheritance rights, or have the ability to run in parliament. They are also uninformed and often uneducated. This also applies to men. Today, black men and children in Libya, are being forced against their will into slave trade. Yet, in the United States, we are all considered free, having the same rights and opportunities as others. This shows equality should not be taken for granted. We should appreciate our rights, taking full advantage of the opportunities we have. For, we could live in a world where we may not have any.

After completing assignment one, I learned it’s important to accept people from different backgrounds. For instance, by accepting different cultures, it gives us the opportunity to learn about different cultures, becoming a diverse society, and it reduces violence and discrimination towards people of different backgrounds. I believe this is very important due to the world we live in today. Today, people from different backgrounds and people from different cultures are judged and discriminated against due to their ethnicity. This is unacceptable. That’s why I believe if people took the time to learn about the different cultures, others would not be so quick to judge and, instead, appreciate one another’s culture. After all, America has adopted various customs and traditions from different cultural groups already. Their influence is what made the United States such a diverse place today.
