Over the course of my academic journey at Old Dominion University, I have developed a strong foundation in cybercrime and criminal justice while demonstrating consistent academic success and leadership growth. This self-assessment highlights my recent accomplishments, ongoing challenges, career aspirations, and areas for continued development. Overall, my experience reflects a pattern of perseverance, leadership capability, and commitment to growth, while also identifying the need to strengthen balance, active learning strategies, and professional skill development as I approach graduation.

One of my most significant accomplishments has been maintaining a high academic standard, currently holding a 3.9 GPA while pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Cybercrime. This achievement reflects not only my academic discipline but also my ability to manage demanding coursework effectively. Additionally, being selected as a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) has provided opportunities to strengthen my leadership and professional communication skills. Another major highlight includes completing a white paper on child cyberpornography and the sexual exploitation of children on the internet. This project allowed me to engage deeply with a topic directly aligned with my career goals and to analyze real-world data, particularly from organizations such as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Finally, entering my final semester as a senior and preparing to graduate in December represents a major milestone that reflects years of dedication and persistence.

Despite these successes, I have faced several challenges, particularly in balancing academic responsibilities with personal and mental health. Managing coursework while navigating life obstacles has been difficult, and at times I have struggled to feel fully engaged in my learning. While my grades indicate strong performance, I often feel as though I am passively absorbing information rather than actively retaining and applying it. This disconnect has made it challenging to feel fully confident in my academic progress. Although my priorities have remained consistent, earning my degree and performing well academically, I recognize that success should also include meaningful learning and personal growth, not just strong grades.

Looking ahead, my primary priorities include establishing a more effective routine that balances school, work, and personal well-being, especially as I enter my final semester. I also aim to develop strategies that promote active learning, ensuring that I retain and understand material in a way that supports my future career. Additionally, I am beginning the process of applying for post-graduation positions that will provide relevant experience in investigative and forensic work. Potential obstacles include ongoing mental and physical health challenges, as well as the unpredictability of life circumstances. To overcome these challenges, I recognize the importance of prioritizing my health and creating a sustainable balance between academic and personal responsibilities. I measure success not only through academic performance but also through my ability to feel engaged in my learning and maintain overall well-being.

My academic background includes an associate degree in criminal justice and my current bachelor’s degree in cybercrime, which aligns with my intended career path in investigative and forensic work. I am particularly interested in working in a behind-the-scenes investigative role rather than fieldwork, with a long-term goal of joining the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. In the short term, my goal is to graduate and secure a position that provides foundational experience in investigations or digital forensics. Long-term, I aim to establish a stable career, relocate as needed, and achieve personal milestones such as homeownership. To prepare for these goals, I have focused on aligning my academic work with my career interests, including my research on online child exploitation. I have also begun applying for positions and networking to identify opportunities that will help me gain relevant experience.

Throughout my academic and professional experiences, I have demonstrated leadership in multiple settings. My acceptance into NSLS reflects my commitment to leadership development, while my promotion to a supervisory role in a hospital security environment highlights my ability to lead in high-pressure situations. In this role, I coordinated responses to hospital-wide incidents, ensured the safety of patients and staff, and worked collaboratively with healthcare professionals and law enforcement. These experiences strengthened my ability to communicate clearly, make decisions under pressure, and guide teams effectively. I have found that leadership often involves stepping forward when direction is needed, and I have consistently taken initiative in situations where others required guidance.

To continue growing, I recognize the need for additional support in developing structured routines and improving study techniques. As an online student, I also need to take greater initiative in utilizing available resources, including networking opportunities through my university and professional organizations. While I currently do not work within a consistent team environment, I draw inspiration from a former supervisor who demonstrated rapid career advancement through strong leadership and work ethic. Observing his progression reinforced the importance of dedication, adaptability, and continuous self-improvement.

One of my greatest sources of pride is my ability to collaborate effectively with others. In group-based coursework, I have built strong working relationships with peers, resulting in successful project outcomes. Additionally, I take pride in my academic timeline, having graduated high school at 16, earned my first degree at 18, and now preparing to complete my second degree at 21. This achievement represents not only academic success but also resilience in overcoming personal and mental challenges. It demonstrates my ability to persevere despite obstacles and remain committed to my goals.

Moving forward, I aim to strengthen both academic and professional skills, particularly in areas related to studying, information retention, and technical expertise. I recognize the importance of developing skills beyond the classroom, including pursuing independent study in areas such as digital forensics and cyber investigations. Improving my study habits will be a critical first step, as it will enhance both my academic performance and my ability to apply knowledge in real-world contexts. By actively seeking new learning methods and dedicating time to skill development, I will be better prepared to contribute meaningfully to my future career.

In conclusion, my academic and professional journey reflects strong achievement, leadership development, and a clear sense of direction toward my career goals. While I have demonstrated success through high academic performance and leadership roles, I also recognize the importance of improving balance, active learning, and skill development. As I approach graduation, I am focused on refining these areas while continuing to build toward a career in investigative and forensic work. This self-assessment highlights both my accomplishments and my commitment to ongoing growth, positioning me for continued success beyond my academic career.

Self-assessment is an essential tool for evaluating personal and professional growth, particularly when preparing to transition from academic life into a career field.
