Interpretive Listening

In Spanish 102, a key part of the course is being able to listen to Spanish and be able to respond correctly and cohesively. This is achieved through many different types of learning activities we did throughout the course.

In this activity, we listened to an audio and had to guess based on a few pictures who said what. This helped us recognize vocabulary and grammar structures when listening to others speak.

In this activity, we listened to audio describing pictures, and decide if the audio was true or false.

Along with many more listening activities, we also watched Flash Cultura videos that required us to really pay attention to what was being said in order to understand. This taught us to recognize vocabulary and grammar, but also taught us about Spanish – speaking culture and customs.

Another part of Interpretive Listening is being able to respond to what you’ve heard. TalkAbroad allowed us to speak with a native Spanish speaker to help us with interpretive listening and speaking skills. This helped a lot because it helped teach us how to keep a conversation going and discuss multiple topics.

Interpretive Reading

In Spanish 102, we did many activities that required us to read passages and analyze them. This helps us memorize vocabulary and see how it’s used in context. Reading activities also help because we get to see grammar rules in action and how they’re important to the context of the passage. We also had to read passages to help educate us about hispanic communities, and different traditions and customs.

In this activity, we learned about “La Siesta,” and then answered questions about it in class to demonstrate our understanding of the reading.

In Chapter 6, we read a passage about open-air markets, or, “Los Mercados al Aire Libre.” After we read this passage, we had an activity where we had to answer questions about the passage to demonstrate comprehension.

We also used interpretive reading to learn about Hispanic history, even as far back as the Mayans. We also learned about important Spanish-speaking artists, such as Frida Kahlo. This helps us get a better understanding of the language we’re learning to speak and the culture that comes with it.

Presentational Writing

Presentational Writing allows us to practice our spanish writing skills and demonstrate our understanding of vocabulary and grammar rules. We did many forms of presentational writing, such as on tests or compositions done in class.
