I have learned a lot of about teaching second language learners throughout this semester. My main goal coming into this class was to learn the skills necessary to be a better educator or speech therapist for people of all backgrounds. I wanted to further my knowledge of methods used for language learning so that I could apply those skills in my future career endeavors. I have learned about the activities and assessments that I could offer students in each of the five language skills. I also understand what a reliable and useful lesson plan may look like and how to create one.
The most helpful activity this semester for me was the conversation partner. Not only did I really enjoy it but it was also very useful for me to practice the techniques that I have learned in this class and past classes about how to repair communication breakdowns. I love to learn about other cultures and really value the information that I was able to learn from my communication partner. In the future, I plan to be a Speech Language Pathologist so for me it was very useful to be able to communicate with an English learner and apply the material that I have learned so far.
I can confidently say that I am leaving this class with a greater understanding of the English language learning process and how I can provide the best learning process for a student of any level, age, or background. Though I do not plan on being a teacher in the future, I found that this class was very valuable to me to make me a better clinician in the future.
