Warm-up (7 min)
Participation Framework: Whole class
Objective #3
- T starts to talk about relationships and who are common people that we share relationships with. T can talk about how they have a relationship with their mom, dad, sister, brother, husband, wife, best friend and somethings that they value about that relationship
- T asks students to answer “Who are some people you share a relationship with, what is their name, and 1 thing you value about that relationship?
- Ss raise their hands and participate in the discussion
- At the end the T can write on the board who we commonly share relationships with
Grammar: (17 min)
Participation Framework: Individual work
Objective #1
- For this activity the T will be using a matching worksheet (see appendix A)
- The T will pass out the worksheet
- Ss will be required to match the infinitives to the correct sentence
- The sentences are incomplete and the Ss will be required to pick the answer that fits in the blank
- For example: It’s important____ in a relationship. There are answers that say, “to lie” and “to communicate” and the Ss will have to choose the one that matches the best
- While the Ss are doing this the T should be walking around the room and checking to make sure that Ss are on task and understanding what they are being asked to do as well as offering corrective feedback
- After each S chooses the correct answer, the T will then ask for them to create 3 sentences using infinitives that are not are the worksheet
- At the end the teacher asks for each student to share and offer corrective feedback while they present
Listening: (17 min)
Participation Framework: Individual and class activity
Objective: #3
- The T will hand out a worksheet to each student (Appendix B)
- The T will play a recording of someone who is talking about his family
- While listening to the recording the Ss should be answering the questions on the worksheet about the recording
- After playing the video the T should check that every student was able to fill it out and if not, replay it
- Once every S has all of the answers filled out the T should go over the correct answers by asking Ss to volunteer to share their answers
- After this, the students should walk around the room and ask 5 questions about their peers family
- After they ask their peer 5 questions about their family, they should then go to another peer and introduce the peer they interviewed to another peer, using the information about their family that they just learned
- Allow each S to interview a peer and be interviewed themselves
Speaking: (17 min)
Participation Framework: Individual and class activity
Objective: #2
- To begin the teacher should introduce the idea of modals and why we may use them especially when speculating. They should write on the board common modals that are used for the Ss to refer back to during this activity
- For this activity Ss will be required to look around the room and make speculations about their classmates’ families while using modals and write them down
- T should be walking around the room while this is happening to be available for any questions
- After each student writes down 3 speculations, then they can go up to that person that they speculated about their and see if their speculation is accurate
- To make this activity game based after they have made speculations about their peers’ families and confront them to see if they are true, they should go back to their desks. The T will then give the students 5 minutes to write down speculations about the teacher and the student that gets the most correct will win.
Wrap up: (5 min) (optional if time allows)
Participation Framework: Group work
- T will tell the Ss to get into groups of 3 or 4 and the Ss should discuss the most important takeaway from this class
- Then the Ss break off into groups and begin discussing and agree on one important point
- Each group presents what they agreed on and the T will write in on the board
- After class the T should type up these points and hand them out to the Ss at the beginning of the next class, so they have those important points for reference in the future
Summary
In this lesson students will be learning about relationships and what they entail. This is a lesson for low intermediate students and the objectives are to speculate about people, discuss relationships and what they entail, and produce expressions using infinitives. The activities are designed to target all three activities; grammar, speaking, and listening. The tasks are authentic and students will use the material in their everyday communication. I also provided informal assessment throughout the whole lesson. I chose these activities specifically because I thought that they are consistent with the level of the students as well as the topic of relationships. I specifically ordered the tasks so that they start with grammar and finish with speaking activities so that the students can work towards the hardest tasks.
The warm-up is a short and easy task to get brains working and introducing the topic that is going to be covered in the lesson. The next task is a grammar activity that targets the objective of using infinitives. I designed it to be easy to follow along while also demonstrating how one would use infinitives in their everyday communication. I related the activity to relationships by showing specifically how you would use infinitives and discuss actions that we make to communicate in relationships. The next task is a listening activity and targets objective 3 of learning about relationships and what they entail. This activity allows students to learn about relationships people commonly share with their family and then interact with their peers and learn about their peer’s family. Then the last task, being the hardest, is a speaking activity. This activity targets objective 2 of using modals and context clues to speculate about people. This is another engaging activity that requires students to use modals to speculate about their peers families and is also a game-based assessment activity. Then finally, I included a short wrap up activity to tie up the whole lesson and solidify what the students learned from this lesson. I believe that this lesson plan is easy to follow and simple, while also being extremely productive for the students and teacher.
