Introduction to Cybersecurity
This course provides an overview of the field of cybersecurity. It covers core cybersecurity topics including computer system architectures, critical infrastructures, cyber threats and vulnerabilities, cryptography, information assurance, network security, and risk assessment and management. Students are expected to become familiar with fundamental security concepts, technologies, and practices. This course provides a foundation for further study in cybersecurity.
The course objectives are:
- Identify and prioritize information assets;
- Identify and prioritize threats to information assets;
- Define an information security strategy and architecture;
- Plan for and respond to intruders in an information system;
- Describe legal and public relations implications of security and privacy issues; and
- Present a disaster recovery plan for recovery of information assets after an incident.
Cyber 300 is another course that gives Cyber security students on what the job is all about. Before, when I chose this major I didn’t have a specific idea about what it’s about but this class answered that question. One assignment that stood out to me was a discussion board assignment. The question was “What are the benefits and risks in the use of SSO? Specify measures that can be taken to better secure a SSO system.” At first I had no Idea what SSOs were but After doing research I was able to give an answer to that question and know the fact that we use it in our daily lives.
On this specific assignment, I gained the knowledge that SSO means Single Sign On, which is defined as a process whereby users can access multiple accounts or systems using only one username and password. In addition, this assignment taught me that the SSO can be very beneficial or very harmful to us. This is because if our passwords are not strong enough, hackers can have access to all our information at once. Furthermore, it made me realize that we use this everyday as students and even professors in this school. The SSO is an example of our MIDAS ID and password. Knowing this I plan to use to further my education in my Cyber security career and even my daily life.
Below is my artifact, which is a discussion board post in which we were asked “What are the benefits and risks in the use of SSO? Specify measures that can be taken to better secure a SSO system.”
MODULE 5
What are the benefits and risks in the use of SSO? Specify measures that can be taken to better secure a SSO system.
SSO, means Single Sign On, it is a process where users can access multiple accounts or systems using only one username and password. In many ways this can be very beneficial because it makes things simpler for the user and they also don’t have to memorize all their different passwords. In addition, this will also help the user develop stronger passwords for more security. Furthermore, this can also be a big problem when the password isn’t strong enough, the user is at a high risk of all his/her accounts being hacked. Some measures that can be taken to better secure a SSO system is a two factor authentication, this will make sure that something else is stopping a hacker even if the password isn’t strong enough.
