Module 10 Entry

Cybersecurity is a subdomain of national security that focuses on the science of characterizing, understanding, and forecasting cyber-mediated changes in human behavior and social, cultural, and political outcomes. This emerging field seeks to build the infrastructure needed for society to persist in the face of cyber-mediated information threats. Social cybersecurity differs from traditional cybersecurity in that it involves humans using technology to “hack” other humans, rather than information systems. It is a multidisciplinary field that incorporates political science, sociology, communication science, and other disciplines. The greatest strategic weakness for any country is internal, not external. Military leaders must understand social cybersecurity in order to defend against external manipulation of these internal weaknesses. Social cybersecurity is a required discipline for the foreseeable future and policies must be developed to enable its use. Military leaders must educate their force and indirectly educate society about the decentralized nature of the modern information environment and the risks that exist. They must also seek to remove any wedge of distrust driven between the military and the society it defends.
